The Wearin' O' the Green

O'dear, it's that time of year ... better wear green on March 17th or you might get pinched! Looking for a cure for those wintertime blues? Celebrate St. Patrick's Day, like never before.

First, a wee bit o' history:
Saint Patrick was the patron saint who is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. He is most known for driving the snakes from Ireland. (Though there is question if there ever really were snakes in Ireland.) Some say it was symbolic rather than literal, as he drove paganism out of Ireland. St. Patrick's Day is now associated with all things Irish: green, shamrocks, leprechauns, gold at the end of a rainbow, etc.

Now, a wee bit o' fun:
Do you like green eggs and ham? Why not try it out? A few drops of green food coloring will make any ho-hum meal, a blast this St. Patrick's Day. For dessert, try a sweet treat:

Shamrock Shake
Blend:
1 Banana
2 cups lime sherbet
1 cup cold milk

Have a blast dancing to "The Wearin' O The Green" from "I Have a Song For You Volume 2: About Seasons and Holidays" while wearing your own Leprechaun Mask.

Make a Leprachan mask:

Recommended materials: heavy paper, pencil, crayons, scissors, small sponge squares, clothespin, orange poster paint, yarn, paper punch and tape.

Directions: Print or trace the mask (see the picture below or trace from page 33 of the "I Have a Song For You Volume 2 Activity Book). Color hat and shamrock green. Cut mask out. Attach clothespin to sponge and dip gently into orange poster paint. Wipe off excess paint and sponge blot Leprechaun's hair and beard. Let dry. Reinforce mask at x's with tape on back of mask. Punch holes at the x's and attach yarn for ties.

Click the picture below. Select "print" from the file menu to print the mask on heavy paper.
